Journey Behind the Falls - Niagara Falls Tour Guide  Back to Niagara Falls Tour Guide

The Journey Behind the Falls Attraction promises to be one of the best Niagara Falls sight-seeing locations. An elevator ride will drop you 150 feet down through solid rock to the Cataract and Great Falls Portals which are behind the falls, and then to both upper and lower observation decks located at the foot of the falls for the ultimate close-up view. In colder months, the mist freezes and clings to everything it touches, creating a magical winter scene. During the summer, the water rushes at a rapid 65km per hour! Raincoats are offered for dryness, and are yours to keep as a souvenir. On your way out, you’ll get to stop by the Canadian Treasures gift shop, where Royal Canadian Mounted Police products, Canadian diamonds and crystals can be purchased. Kids Explore-it and Pop & Lolly’s Candy shop are also must-stop shops for kids! Hungry or thirsty anyone? The Elements on the Falls restaurant is open year round on the Falls upper level, and Horseshoe Landing Terrace is a great place to cool off for drinks and snacks, open during the summer months.

Journey Behind the Falls Hours of Operation

Did you know?

The Journey Behind the Falls started as the “Sheet of Falling Water” attraction in 1832 where a spiral staircase took visitors behind the falls at the cost of $1.00. In 1887 the staircase was taken out and replaced with a hydraulic elevator. The first tunnels were built in 1889 and the attraction was renamed the “Scenic Tunnels” in 1952. Over the years, electricity was installed through the tunnels, tunnel extensions were made and an observation plaza was put in. In 1994, the name was changed from the “Scenic Tunnels” to Journey Behind the Falls.
