In 1965, Alan Stillman founded the first Friday’s® restaurant in New York City. According to Newsweek and The Saturday Evening Post, the opening of the first Friday’s restaurant heralded the dawn of the singles age. Friday’s restaurants have been the employer of several well-known celebrities - Kathy Mattea, Sean Patrick Flannery of “Young Indiana Jones” and Brad Garrett of "Everybody Loves Raymond". Friday’s restaurants have a long history of innovation, including being credited with:
- Popularizing the term Happy Hour with the young singles set in the 1960's.
- Inventing the Long Island Iced Tea and Loaded Potato Skins.
- Popularizing frozen and ice cream drinks.
- Pioneering non-alcoholic Smoothies and Flings in honor of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Friday's has a large menu with an emphasis on alcoholic beverages. T.G.I.Friday's has a unique drink selection known as "Ultimates." These are drinks that are placed in an 18 oz. new swirl design glass. These drinks are often made with top shelf and darker liquors.
There is a variation of the original swirl glassware including a 2007 summer promotion sombrero ultimate glass used for Margaritas and a red swirl martini glass used for martinis. A section of their menu is dedicated to the "Jack Daniel's Grill", a selection of items flavored with a special Jack Daniel's sauce. Fridays formerly was associated with Atkins approved appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
Since 2006, the menu has discontinued the Atkins name and several platters were redubbed "Low Carb". T.G.I.Friday's sporadically participates in a promotion known as the "3-Course Menu." With this menu, guests can pay $12.99 (or $16.99 for higher priced entrees) and choose an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert from a predetermined list. In turn the company licenses its name to Heinz for foods such as snack items and frozen foods in grocery stores around the USA.
